We never really forget anything; we just don’t consciously remember everything. You don’t think about the kids in your first-grade class all those years ago. You don’t think about what you had for dinner two months ago. You barely remember the fender bender you had last year. There’s lots and lots of stuff that’s buried in our vast minds. There if we need it, but mainly forgotten. We tend to be concerned more with the day to day things, like what’s for dinner, should you watch tv or clean the bathroom tonight, do you have time for happy hour after work. But every now and then you pull a special memory out and relive it in your mind until it becomes real again. You remember and bring those feelings alive again. I recently made one of those time to remember.

My sister had come for a visit. She, a friend and I drove out of the city into the foothills to look at the stars. It was a nice warm summer evening and the city lights looked beautiful as we drove up to the higher elevation. The windows were down and music was playing. We talked a little, but mostly watched the night settle in and the stars peek out.

I pulled off the road around a curve that blocked the city lights below and we stepped out into darkness. The crickets and night insects sounded loud in the quiet. You could smell dust and the scent of sage in the air. A bright half moon shone overhead surrounded by God’s most beautiful stars. On that quiet mountain road, in the moonlight, under the stars, with ‘Sprit in the Sky’ playing on a cd in the background, we danced. We danced and laughed and lived.

It is a memory I cherish and one I will pull out and relive often.
